The Surrey eleven were seen to better ad vantage than against the Australians in the first inter-county match of the season, con cluded at the Oval on Saturday last. Owing to rain the game was not begun until Friday morning, but the wicket did not appear to be at any time materially affected by the down pour, and the cricket on Friday at least was fairly interesting. At one time it looked as if Surrey, who went in first, were in for a good score. While the two Reads were together the telegraph showed 160 runs for three wickets, but after their separation Messrs. W . G. Grace and Radcliffe bowled with great effect, and the last six wiokets only added 37 runs. The Reads, while they were partners, increased the total to the extent of 122 runs, and but for their stand Surrey would have fared badly. Both batsmen played with great freedom, and singularly enough, both were out in precisely the same way, lbw. Mr. Read was never troubled by the bowling in any way, and he played with the greatest confidence faom first to last. Maurice Read hit with vigour, and his 64 was too altogether a highly creditable display. Gloucestershire went in to bat at twenty minutes to four o’clock on Friday, and play ceased for the day with the close of their innings at a quarter-past six. In the space of two hours and thirty-five minutes only 115 runs were got, and of these 63 were contri buted by Messrs. W . G. Grace and Troup. The former, who went in second wicket down, was in his best form, and he was scoring very fast when he fell to a brilliant catch at point by Mr. W . W . Read. Mr. Troup, a young amateur who, it may be remembered, showed great defence against Surrey on the occasion of his first appearance for Gloucestershire at Moreton-in-the-Marsh last year, batted with strict care. He was in fifty-five minutes with out scoring, and altogether two hours at the wickets for his 22. The show of the Gloucester shire eleven in their second innings was very disappointing. Following on in a minority of 85 runs, Mr. Troup, who opened the batting with Mr. W. G. Grace, was soon run out, and this was the commencement of a series of disasters. Mr. E. M. Grace was in a long time for his runs, but except his brother and Mr. Francis, no one else got double figures, and Mr. W . G. Grace was again the highest scorer with 13. The innings did not last quite an hour and a half, and by half-past twelve o’clock Surrey had won by an innings and 37 runs. In the match Lohmann took twelve Gloucestershire wickets for 66 runs—a fine E erformance, considering that he had only een a few days on shore. S u r r e y . Abel, run out ......... 4 Wood, b W. G.
