The Essex Club opened its season on Saturday at Leyton with a trial match between teams selected by the captain, Mr. C. E. Green, and the well-known Essex pro fessional, H. Pickett. Mr. Green was unable to play himself owing to a cold, but his side, which included Messrs. W. W. Read and C. I. Thornton, won after a good match by 33 runs. Pickett took nine wickets for 67 runs. The players were of course not in practice, and the weather was too cold for the enjoyment either o f those taking part in or looking on at the game. Score and analysis :— M r .
