SEPT. 22, 1887. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 419 THE HASTINGS WEEK* GENTLEMEN OF SUSSEX v. PLAYERS OF SUSSEX. The Hastings Week, commenced on the 8th of September, came to a close on Thursday last with the completion of this, the third fixture. The Gentlemen were far from well represented, but they had, as.will be seen, by no means'the worstof the game, andtherewasvery littleto favoureithersideinthe draw, thePlayers wanting 27 runs to win with four wickets to fall. Owing to rain the wickets were never at any period of the game in favour of the bats men, and Mr. McCormick was by far the most successful of the twenty-two, making eighty- six runs in the two innings, each time by ex cellent cricket. On the side of the Players Jesse Hide was seen to the best advantage. His thirty-two in the second innings was of the greatest value to his side. The brothers Hide, Bean, and Tester were the most success ful bowlers for the Players; Messrs. Godfrey and Pigg for the Amateurs. G e n t l e m e n . First Innings. Mr. H. Pigg, b B ean........... As we have already stated, the week proved a great success financially as well as from a cricket standpoint, and there seems every reason to believe that Hastings will have an annual celebration after the model of Canter bury, Scarborough, Cheltenham and other towns. The success of this inaugural meeting has been in a great measure due to the Chair man of the Managing Committee, Mr. R. Lydgate, who was for some years on the executive of the Surrey County Club, and the two Honorary Secretaries, Capt. Greatrex and Mr. Carless. To their energy the towns folk of Hastings will be chiefly indebted if, as there is every reason to believe, the Hast ings Week becomes a permanent institution in the cricket world. HAMPSTEAD CLUB.
