Cricket 1887
4io CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. SEPT. 15,1887. companion, Tom Hayward, went up to Lord’s from the Oval, and in the very next match also got into three figures, scoring 132 for the Players against the Gentlemen at the commencement of the following week. The match between the Christopherson Family and the Blackheath Club is now an annual event, at least, it has been played to the best of my knowledge for some years. It is hardly correct, though, to call the match The Brothers Christopherson against the Blackheath Club. The Chris topherson team, as I pointed out last year, is composed of Mr.Derman Christopherson and his nine sons. I wonder how many fathers can claim as Mr. D. Christopher son was once able to do, to put ten sons —and most of them fairly good cricketers, too—into the field. MELBOURNE CLUB TEAM. “ The labour we delight in physics pain.” The sentiment in any case is good even if the quotation is not strictly accurate. It has been a pleasant labour for me to “ gossip” on week by week, babbling of cricket and things appertain ing to cricketers, and it is a matter for regret—for me at least—that the sum mer is over and that my intercourse with C r i c k e t readers will for a time be less frequent. Brought down to the level of ordinary commonplace phraseology this only means that after Thursday next, which is the last of this year’s summer numbers, “ Gossip” will only appear monthly instead of weekly — weakly, perhaps some of my good-natured and plain-spoken friends will be polite enough to say, or at least think—as during the summer. The first of the winter monthly issues, I may add, will be published on Thursday, October 27th, and the five following numbers on the last Thursday of each succeeding month. THE ENGLISH TEAMS IN AUS TRALIA. G. F. Vernon, Middx. M. B. Hawke, Yorks. W. W. Read, Surrey. M. P. Bowden, Surrey. A. E. Stoddart, Middx. T. C. O’Brien, Middx. A. E. Newton, Somer. R. Abel, Surrey. J. T. Rawlin, Yorks. R. Peel, Yorks. W. Bates, Yorks. J. Beaumont, Surrey. W. Attewell, Notts. It was understood just lately that Mr. W. E. Roller, the well-known Surrey Amateur, who had been obliged to retire owing to ill-health, would after all accom pany the team. From the latest informa tion to hand, however, we believe it is doubtful whether he will make the journey. SHAW, SHREWSBURY AND LILLY- WHITE’S TEAM. This afternoon several of the twenty- six cricketers who are to visit Australia during the coming winter will take the first step on their long journey. Both teams, the one under the auspices of the Melbourne Club, collected by Mr. G. F. Vernon, the other managed by Shaw, Shrewsbury and Lillywhite, are to sail, as is well-known, in the “ Iberia,” a steamer belonging to the Orient line, which is due to leave Plymouth on Saturday next. Twelve of the thirteen players who own allegiance to Shaw and Co. will, it is stated, foregather at Plymouth, the exception being Mr. C, A. Smith, the Sussex Captain. The members of the Melbourne Club team, or at least several of them, will, on the other hand, join the “ Iberia ” off Tilbury this afternoon, The two parties will be constituted as under:— G.A.Lohmann,Surrey J. Briggs, Lancs. R. Pilling, Lancs. G. Ulyett, Yorkshire. J. M. Preston, Yorks. A.D. Pougher, Leices. C. A. Smith, Sussex. W. Newham, Sussex. G. Brann, Sussex. L. C. Docker, Derby. J.
