Stormont then, in fifty minutes left before time, scored 116 runs for two wiokets, an average rate of 140 runs an hour* Almost 'all the hits were run out. ESSEX v. SURREY. Heavy rain prevented the delivery of a ball in this return match at Leyton, on Thursday or Friday, and, as a consequence, the game was left unfinished on Saturday. As was only to be expected, the wicket, as it dried, was in favour of the bowlers, and the Essex eleven, who went in first, were soon dismissed, their innings only lasting an hour and forty minutes. Lohmann and C. Mills, one of last year’s colts, who had played once before for the County, bowled unchanged, and the only batsman to make any stand was Bastow, who played plucky cricket for his 31. Though Maurice Read hit freely when Surrey went in, Pickett bowled with success, and the total was only 90 when half the wickets were down. Mr. Key and Lohmann, however, got the measure of the Essex bowling, and 103 had been added before the latter, who had only made one mistake in an excellent innings of 50, was caught. Mr. Key, who went in first wicket down with the total at 31, was not out till the score had reached 253. He had made 105 of 222 got during his stay, and, except for a hot return towards the close, gave no actual chance. Considering the state of the wicket his per formance was a most creditable one. His fine batting on this occasion was only a fitting ter mination to a season of remarkable success. E s s e x . - Mr. H. G.
