B o th sides w ere w ell represented, bu t M arylebone had th e best of the gam e after the first hands, and the draw w as v e ry m u ch in th eir favour, w ith nine w ickets to go dow n and on ly 54 runs to w in. T h e Y orksh irem en, w h o w en t in first, w ere in all th e opening day, th ou g h rain suspended play once fo r a short tim e. O f their total o f 291, 190 w ere con tribu ted b y three batsm en, Peel, U lyett and L ee, all o f w h om played fine free cricket. T h ou gh n o p la y wa3 possible on F rid a y till after lu n ch eon , thanks to som e excellent battin g b y M essrs. W alker, W ebbe, and N epean, M arylebone, in spite of a bad start, show ed up fairly w ell, h aving m ade 159 for s ix w ickets w hen play ceased on F rid a y night. So fa r the play w as all in favou r of Y orksh ire, b u t som e brillian t h ittin g on the follow in g m orn in g b y M essrs. P a ra vicin i and W ilson entirely ch an ged th e aspect o f the gam e. T h e form er m ig h t have been caught and b ow led w h en he had m ade 22, bu t other w ise there w as no flaw in an exception ally good display of battin g. G oin g in a second tim e w ith eleven runs to th e good, Y orksh ire m ade a bad start against the b ow lin g o f M essrs. Stoddart and N epean, and L ee proved to be the highest scorer w ith 22. T h e tw o am ateurs n am ed w ere u nchanged during the innings, and M r. S toddart, w h o has n ot hitherto m ade an y nam e as a bow ler, w as p ar ticu larly successful, takin g six w ickets for on ly th irty-th ree rung. H ad n ot rain interfered, M arylebone w ou ld have h ad to get 100 to w in in 85 m inutes, an d this task w ou ld have been w ell w ith in th eir reach. N eitherjside w as quite representative, b u t still, th e cricket show n w as fully up to the average. O w ing to h eavy rain a com m en ce m ent cou ld n ot be m ade on M onday, an d as yesterday from the sam e cause a resum ption was n ot possible until after h alf past one o ’clock, th e tim e fo r play w as considerably cu r tailed. T h e S outh, w h o w ent in first, w ere dism issed fo r 168, o f w h ich num ber exactly one-half w ere con tribu ted b y M aurioe R ead. T h e Surrey profession al h it in his m ost brillian t style, and w ith only one m istake, a h o t return to Barnes, w h o cou ld n ot h old the ball, w hen he had g ot 77. W h en th e N orth w en t in L oh m a n n qu ick ly disposed o f Barnes, U lyett and L ee, and w ith these three batsm en ou t fo r 45, things looked fairly w ell fo r the South. A useful stand b y M r. H aw ke and H all, how ever, im p roved the position of the N orth considerably, and w hen play ceased on T u esd ay n igh t th ey w ere 11 runs to the good, w ith fou r w ickets to fall. W h en play w as resum ed yesterday, H all, w h o w as 77 n ot ou t overnight, fou n d a useful ally in Preston, and th e total w as raised to 261, or 93 ahead, before th e ten th w icket fell. H all, w h o w ent in first, carried his ba t th rou gh the innings. H is play w as characterised by m ore freedom than usual, and his score o f 105 n ot out, w hich w as free from a m istake, w as a rem arkably fine display o f batting, one o f m any brilliant exh ibition s to his credit th is year. G oing in again th e S ou th lost five w ickets in their second innings before play ceased, so that the gam e w as draw n, the Southerners being on ly tw o runs on w ith h alf th eir w ickets gone.
