The Annual Western Tour of the Incogs took place, as usual, during the first fortnight in August. The opening match against East Gloucestershire, at Cheltenham, was won by 218 runs, mainly owing to the fine batting of Leatham and Barlow, and the general good fielding of the team. At Bath the Incogs succumbed quickly, owing to a bad wicket, though, again thanks to Leatham’s fine hitting, they made some improvement in the second innings. Had they held the catches offered them (Porter being missed no less than four times) they might have had a chance of winning, but were ultimately beaten by five wickets. At Torquay, again, the ground was in a terrible condition, and Anscombe and Par menter were perfectly unplayable. The second week witnessed an improvement, and the fourth match of the tour, against Ex mouth, was won by the visitors by 74 runs. Avory carried his bat through the second innings, Leatham and Lindsay rendering great assistance. The match against the Ishmaelites, for which the Exmouth Club kindly granted the use of their ground, was drawn in favour of the Incogs, for whom W. E. Martyn and Leatham both scored over the century. Marsh Baved the match for the Ishmaelites by his Steady and imperturbable defence. W. E. Martyn, in the first innings, took five wickets for 14 runs. At Sidmouth, as usual, the wanderers found a very strong team opposed to them, and the match was ultimately drawn against them. Roller, who had been hitherto under a cloud, here came out in his true colours, and played an admirable innings of 88, being well backed up by Barlow and Page. In the second innings Cobbold and the Captain put on 48 runs for the last wicket, and probably saved the match. Buckland played excellent and free cricket for Sidmouth. The tour altogether was very successful, and but for the bad wickets at Bath and Torquay it is probable no match would have been lost. Leathamwas in grand form all round. Stobart was the most successful bowler, the grounds hardly suiting Cobbold, and Roller was a most useful change. The “ Skipper” was very much “ on the spot ” with the coin, winning five tosses out of IN C O G N IT I v. E A S T G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E . P layed at C heltenham on A u gust 1 and 2.
