Cricket 1887
s e p t , j , 1887. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. 875 LANCASHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. The Yorkshire eleven signalised the close of their season most auspiciously with a highly creditable victory over Lancashire at Man chester on Saturday. Considering the great interest attached to this particular match, it was hoped Mr. A. G. Steel would be able to help Lancashire, but he was absent, as was Mr. Eccles, whose place was taken by another Prestonian, Mr. J. Leigh. Though Lanca shire went in first on an excellent wicket they made a very disappointing show, and, indeed, Briggs was the highest scorer with 25, not got iq his very best style. The early batsmen of Yorkshire were all in form, and Bates, Hall, Lee, and Mr, Hawke scored so well that at the end of the first day the Yorkshiremen were 33 runs on with only two batsmen out. Rain caused a long stoppage of the game on Friday, but the ground was all in favour of the bat, and the Yorkshire score was increased to 414 before the tenth wicket fell. Ulyett made 44 out of 78 while he was in, and on his retire ment Mr. Hawke and Peel hit away with great freedom. Their partnership realised 137 runs, and of these Peel contributed 66 by clean and well-timed hitting. Mr. Hawke has not been seen to such advantage this season. He gave one chance early in his innings, but afterwards his play was altogether free from error. Lancashire had an uphill game on Saturday, when they went in with 285 runs to avert an innings defeat, and the earlier bats men did so badly that a victory for Yorkshire was assured early in the day. Sugghit freely, but Messrs. Hornby, Leigh, Jowett and Briggs and Barlow were all got rid of cheaply, and atthe fall of the sixth wicket the total was only 64. When the game seemed quite lost, however, Robinson hit in brilliant style, and Baker, Yates, Watson and Pilling all lent him valu able assistance. The last four wickets, indeed, were responsible for 182 of the total of 246,and their plucky play redeemed the previous failures of the side. Robinson made his 92 in under two hours and a-half, and his resolute hitting was decidedly the feature of the last day’s play. Yorkshire won by an innings and 89 runs. — ..— L ancashire .
