Cricket 1887

AUG. 2 d , 1887 tf&ICKBT: A WEEKLY KEGOBD OP THE GAME. 363 SURREY y. YORKSHIRE. B a r r a t t ’ s B e n e f it . The Surrey eleven succeeded in beating Yorkshire decisively in the return match, begun at the Oval on Thursday last, winning soon after three o’clock on the second day by an innings and ten runs. The result was, singularly, almost a repetition of that of the previous fixture at Sheffield, on which occasion the Yorkshiremen were at the finish an innings and thirteen runs to the bad. The wicket was soft after the heavy rains early in the week and overnight, and the Yorkshiremen, who went in first, only reached a moderate total of 123, Lee,who was the highest scorer with 24, showingthe bestcricket onthe side. Lohmann and Mills both bowled with success, and in justice to Wood, who kept wicket well, it must be stated that the large number of byes was not due to any fault of his, Lohmann making the ball do so much as to beat both batsman and wicket-keeper. When Surrey went in Maurice Read hit hard, while Mr. Shuter batted in his best form, and at the end of the .first day Surreywere nine runs on with only two wickets down, a favourable position entirely due to the batsmen just named. Read had some luck, but his hitting all round was very clean, and his innings did much to influence the result. On the second day the ground was even more difficult, and, except Mr. Key, who carried out his bat, none of the later Surrey batsmen did much, the last eight wickets only adding 63 runs. Mr. Key ought to have been caught, but he deserved the highest praise for the careful way in which he watched the ball, and his innings conduced in a great measure to Surrey’s success. Yorkshire went in a second time, wanting 73 runs to save the innings, and, as it happened, this proved a task beyond their powers. Lohmann, helped by the ground, was unplayable, and Ulyett, who was missed at the wicket, was the only one to get double figures. Only 53 were got from the bat, and Lohmann and Mills di vided the wickets equally, the former’s five costing 20, the latter’s five 33 runs. In the match Lohmann got eleven Yorkshiremen at an average of under 6§ runs. Y o r k sh ir e . First Innings.
