The Cheltenham week was brought to an early close on Friday afternoon with the com pletion of the above match, which ended in favour of Gloucestershire by an innings and 15 runs. The wicket was soft from the recent rains, and Gloucestershire, who went in first, got so long a lead that the result was never in doubt. Mr. W. G. Grace was in two hours and five minutes scoring 92 out of 166 during his stay. The bowling of Roberts, the new bowler of Gloucestershire, conduced greatly to the easy victory of his side. Altogether he got eleven Somersetshire wickets at a cost of 84 runs. G lo u c e s te r sh ir e . Dr. W. G. Grace, c A. Painter, c Woods, b E. The Essex eleven suffered their second reverse of the week, at the hands of Kent at Tonbridge, on Friday, when Kent gained another victory in an innings, this time with 26 runs to spare. Essex, who went in first, were not at home on the soft wicket, and were all dismissed for 90, Wootton and Martin bowling unchanged. In their second attempt, thanks to the excellent cricket of Bastow and Mr. Owen, they made a better show, though they failed to get enough runs to put Kent in a second time. Mr. Patterson’s score of 127 not out was the feature of the Kentish batting. He was batting for four hours and a quaiter, and there was not a flaw in his play from first to last. Five batsmen were run out in Kent’s innings. In the match Wootton was credited with eleven wickets at an expense of 118 runs. E ssex . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr.C. E.
