The Nottinghamshire eleven suffered their third reverse of the season at Manchester on Saturday last, when Lancashire defeated them with two wickets to spare. Owing to heavy rain the ground was soft at the outset, and Notts, who went in first, found it as it began to dry very difficult. At luncheon time the score was 62 with only two batsmen out, but afterwards Barlow bowled with such extraordi nary success that the innings was brought to a close in an hour for an addition of only thirty runs. Of the eight last wickets Barlow secured as many as seven, and his analysis after luncheon was remarkable, fourteen overs for 17 runs and seven wickets. Scotton car ried his bat through the innings, which lasted two hours and fifty minutes, and his perform ance was a most meritorious one under great disadvantages. Lancashire made a bad start, and three of the best batsmen were out for 42. Mr. Eccles and Briggs, however, by faultless cricket, put on 54 before they were parted, and, assisted subsequently by some excellent batting on the part of Mr. Jowett, Robinson and Yates, the total was raised to 201 before the tenth wicket fell. In a minority of 109 Notts had au uphill game to play, and their chances were reduced considerably when Scotton was caught with the score at 19. Shrewsbury’s dis missal—l.b.w.—at 40 improved Lancashire’s position still more, and the game was prac tically over at the end of the second day, when Notts, with only three wickets inhand, wanted 20 to avert an innings’ defeat. This they were just able to do, but Lancashire only had six runs to get, and these were got without the loss of a batsman. N otts . First Innings.
