The Surrey Eleven suffered their second defeat of the season in Inter-Count} matches at the Oval on Saturday last, when Lancashire beat them by 147 runs. The winners, with the exception that Mr. A. G. Steel was absent, were in full strength, but their opponentswere considerably weakenedby the loss of Mr. W. E. Roller, Jones, Wood, as well as of Beau mont, whose leg had given way earlier in the week at Brighton. Owing apparently to recent watering of the wicket, the bowlers were at the outset able to get a lot of work on, and on the first day twenty-two wickets fell for an aggre gate of 237. Read was the highest scorer with 33, and Lohmann and he contributed 48 of 62 made by the Surrey eleven from the bat. Lohmann, Briggs and Barlow were all very successful with the ball—in particular Loh mann, who took eight Lancashire wickets for 36 runs, and Barlow, whose five wickets cost 11. When play began on Friday morning Lanca shire had made 68 runs in the second innings with two batsmen out, and this numfeer they increased to 270 before the tenth wicket fell. The chief features of their batting were the stand of Mr. Eccles and Sugg for the third and Mr. Lancashire and Watson for the ninth wicket. Sugg ought to have been caugh before he had scored on the first day, but h hit in brilliant style on the following morning, and his partnership with Mr. Eccles, who played good, steady cricket for his 46, resulted in an addition to the Lancashire total of 152 runs, made in an hour and fifty rcftnutes Sugg’s 98 included twelve 4’s aad six 3’s. Watson and Mr. Lancashire, too, scored fast, adding while they were toget er 60 runs. The Surrey eleven had a very difficult task before them when they entered on their second innings with 313 to win, and the complete failure of the earlier batsmen effectually des troyed any outside chance they may have had. Four wickets were down for 37, and Lohmann and Read again had to redeem the credit of the side, the former, who was unfortunately out from the last ball bowled on the second day, playing remarkably good cricket for his 60. When play was resumed on Saturday morning, Surrey wanted 189 runs to win with only four wickets to fall, and this number was quite beyond their powers, as it proved. Loh- mann’s all-round crieket for Surrey was the best feature of the match. He m^de 75 runs and took thirteen wickets for 111runs. Briggs’s nine wickets for Lancashire cost G9 runs.
