- u i C r i o k e t : a W e e k l y B E c o f i i ) o E t h e g a m e . AUG. 18,1887 YORKSHIRE v. MIDDLESEX. Mr. A. J. Webbe followed up his brilliant performance against Kent in the Canterbury week with another similar achievement in this return match, begun at Huddersfield on Thursday last, carrying his bat through the second innings of Middlesex for a splendid score of 243. Yorkshire, who had to take the field first, had an advantage of 51 runs on the first hands—a result due to the good batting of Mr. Hawke, the Captain, and Ulyett. Mr. Webbe’s remarkable batting on Friday, how ever, gaveMiddlesexlateron acommandingjlead and as the Yorkshiremen would have had to make 464 runs on Saturday, with only eight wickets to fall, the continuous rain on that day was certainly more in their favour than of Middlesex, who could not have lost, and might very easily have won. Some creditable bowling was done by Preston and Mr. Ford in the first innings of Middlesex and Yorkshire res pectively, the former taking seven wickets at a cost of fifty-five, and the latter four for seventeen runs. Mr. Webbe’s extraordinary innings, though, was of course far and away the best feature of the match. During his connection with Middlesex the old Harrovian has previously gone in first and carried out his bat no less than six times. His latest performance, though, is the most noteworthy of all, for a double reason—first, because it is the highest score he has ever made in an im portant .match, and, further, as his second success of the same kind within seven days. He was in all six hours and twenty minutes at the wickets. Though badly missed at short slip when he had got 63, and afterwards let off more than once to difficult chances, his innings was none the less a remarkable display of steady cricket. His score included forty-one 4’s. Mr. O’Brien, too, played excellent cricket, and Messrs. Ford and Lyttelton, the latter of whom had not played before this season for Middlesex, were also seen at their best. The Yorkshire fielding towards the close was very loose. M id d l e s e x .
