Following up their brilliant victory over Notts, the Surrey Eleven brought a successful week to a close on Saturday at the Oval with a victory over Gloucestershire by six wickets. Going in first on a capital wicket the Surrey innings was not completed till Friday morning, realising a total of 357, a much larger amount than at one time seemed likely. Messrs. Shuter, who played admirable cricket from first to last, without the semblance of achance, and Key put on 112 for the second wicket, but after the Captain’s retirement at 152 the game went in favour of Gloucestershire for a time, and five batsmen had been dismissed when the total was 168. Mr. Douglas, who made his first appearance in the Surrey eleven this year, and Lohmann were then partners, and the amateur began with such care that at the end of forty-five minutes he had not got a run, Lohmann having made all the twenty-eight scored from the bat while he was in. With the total at 237 Beaumont joined Mr. Douglas, and the game became much livelier. Beau mont not only hit freely but played really good cricket, and in spite of frequent changes of bowling the two batsmen had added 106 when stumps were drawn, Beaumont not out 60, Mr. Douglas not out 47. On the following morning only fourteen runs were added, and the innings'closed for 357, Mr. Douglas, who had been batting for nearly three hours and a quarter, carrying out his bat for 51, a most useful display of defensive batting without a mistake. Mr. W . G. Grace was soon dismissed when Gloucestershire went in, but his brother gave the Surrey bowlera some trouble, and 4ti Second Innings. of the first 73 came from his bat. Later on Messrs.Page andGriffiths andWoof battedwell, and when the tenth wicket fell the telegraph showed a total of 202, Beaumont having dis missed four batsmen at a cost of 39 runs. Following on in a minority of 153 runs, Glou cestershire made a bad start, and though Messrs. W. G. Grace and Townsend by capital cricket added 59, when play ceased on Friday 55 were still required to save an innings defeat with five wickets to fall. Saturday’s play did not seemlikely tobe very lengthy, but somevery fine cricket by Painter, who batted with great judgmenc and freedom, not only enabled Glou cestershire to save the innings, but to put their opponents in to get 67 to win. Painter was not able to play during the early part of the summer owing to a broken finger, and therefore his success was the more gratifying. Surrey, altering the usual order of going in, lost four wickets, all of which fell to Mr.W. G. Grace, before the requisite number was obtained. Mr. J. H. Brain was not able to play for Gloucestershire, and Mr. W. E. Roller, Jones, and Wood were absent from the Surrey eleven. Mr. W. G. Grace played on each time. S u r r e y . First Innings.
