298 CMCKET: A WEEKLY EECOUD OE THE GAME. JULY 28,1887. of interest. It seems, I fear, likely that neither Mr. Roller, who injured one of his fingers badly at practice on Tuesday after noon, nor Jones will be able to assist Surrey, and their bowling, it is probable, may be missed. Henderson* though, is batting in excellent form just now, and he is sure to play if one of the pair just named is an absentee. Mr. G.AV. Ricketts, oftheOsford eleven, makeshis firstappear- ance for Surrey at Derby to-day, and as he is a useful all-round cricketer he should strengthen the eleven. Mr.. Nepean, another of the Oxford team, who resides and has resided for years in Middlesex, was born at Mitcham, and his services would be of great value to Surrey on Monday could they be secured. After three days of good all-round cricket, the Yorkshire eleven succeeded in defeating Gloucestershire at Dewsbury late yesterday afternoon by 70 runs. Yorkshire securing the choice of innings had first use of an excellent wicket, and took full advantage of their oppor tunity, remaining in until nearly half-past five o’clock, for a creditable total of 334. Ulyett and Hall had made 127 in an hour and thirty- five minutes, when the former, who had played in his very best style for 98, was bowled. Eight of the other ten batsmen got double figures, butthe feature of the Yorkshire batting was the defensive cricket of Hall, who carried his bat through the innings. He was just under four hours and a half at the wickets, and the nature of his play can be gathered from the fact that his score of 119 contained as many as forty-nine singles. When play ceased on Monday night, Glouces tershire had made 56 for the loss of one batsman (Mr. E. M. Grace), and before the innings came to an end they had had the satisfaction of heading Yorkshire by 29 runs. Mr. W. G. Grace after batting in faultless style was unluckily caught at the wicket, when ouly three runs short of his hundred. Mr. Brain, too, showed to better advantage than in previous matches this year, and helped Mr. Grace to add 149, of which he had contributed 74 or just one half, by brilliant cricket. Later on Mr. Pullen got the measure of the Yorkshire bow lers, and his 78 w as a m ost m eritorious in n ings. A t the close of play on T uesday Y ork- s h ire w ere 36 runs on ,w ith nine w ickets to fall and th e gam e presented a very open appear ance. H eavy rain overnight though w orked a great change in the cricket yesterdaj7, and the bow lers had things m ostly th eir ow n wray. R oberts, a left-handed fast bow ler, w ho m ade his first appearance fo r G loucestershire in this m atch, and had been very successful in Y o rk shire’s first innings, w as again m ost effective, gettin g seven w ickets fo r 70 runs. In the m atch altogether he took fourteen w ickets at a cost o f 171 runs. A gain st such bats m en and on such a w icket this w as a very fine perform an ce, ju stifyin g the belief that he w ill be an acquisition to the G loucestershire eleven. G loucestershire had 156 to get to w in in tw o hours and ten m in utes, but P eel and W ade bow led w ith such Jeffect, helped by the ground, that they wrere all ou t for 85. Y orkshire .
