L u cas, Sussex had its fu ll strength to m eet N otts at B righ ton , on T h u rsd ay last, th e C ou n ty m ade a v e ry poor show , and the N ott ingham shire eleven w ere able to claim a m ost decisive v icto ry b y n o less than an innings and 289 runs, a m ost creditable perform an ce. T h ou gh th e y had first innings on an excellent w ick et, the Sussex batsm en, w ith the exception o f Q uaife and Jesse H ide, could on ly reach a total o f 139, o f w h ich th e tw o professionals nam ed contributed 108. Q uaife, w h o is one of th e m ost im p rovin g you n g cricketers w e have, batted in adm irable style. H e gave a hard chance at th e w icket, bu t except fo r this flaw ,his 77 w as in every w ay an excellent exposi tion of batting. S cotton ,w h o had been left out of the m atch against K en t at N ottingham earlier in the w eek, batted w ith great success w hen N otts w en t in, and w ith Shrew sbury scored 172 before a w ick et fell. Shrew sbury, w ho w as the first to leave, w as in three hours, an d th ou gh his play w as n ot faultless, his 101 w as a good display. L a ter on , too, B arnes and M r. H . B . D aft offered a very determ ined resistance to th e Sussex bow lers. T h e part nership resulted in an add ition of 199 runs, and th e cricket w hile th ey w ere togeth er w as som e o f the very best o f th e m atch . B arnes w as battin g four hours and a half, and w hen it is stated that he gave no ch an ce u n til late in h is innings, it w ill be gathered that his play w as o f the h ighest order. M r. D a ft batted w ith great care and ju dgm en t, and, as far as w e cou ld see, there w as no actual m istake du r in g his stay o f nearly fou r hours at th e w icket. S cotton was n ot dism issed till the total had reached 184, o f w h ich his share w as only 58. H e w as, too, out in a very u n lu ck y w ay, goin g aw ay from his w icket u nder the erroneous im pression that he had been caught. Sussex, w h o w anted 376 runs to avert defeat in an innings, w h en th ey w ent in a second tim e w ere again seen to disadvantage. T ester proved to be th e h ighest con tribu tor w ith 21 , and w hen the tenth w icket fell the total was on ly 87.
