Cricket 1887
292 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 28, 1887. KENT v. SURREY. Neither County was represented in full strength on the occasion of their first match of the season, played at x)eckenham on Thurs day and Friday last. Neither Lord Harris nor Mr. W. H. Patterson were able to help Kent, and George Hearne, owing to a sprained ankle, was also an absentee. On the other hand, Surrey’s bowling was not as strong as usual, Mr. Roller and Jones being both pre vented from playing. Mr. Shuter was fortu nate in winning the toss for Surrey, and with Abel, succeeded in putting on 51 runs before the first wicket fell. Messrs. Read and Key were also seen to advantage, and the two amateurs, by very fine cricket, added 102 runs for the third wicket. When the sixth batsman was out the total was 242, but the last four wickets were speedily disposed of, and only six runs were added before the innings closed. The out cricket of the Kent eleven was altogether considerably above the average, and, as will be seen, Pentecost kept wicket with great success. When Kent went in late on Thursday afternoon the ground had already shown signs of wearing, and on the following morning Lohmann, Beaumont and Bowley bowled with such effect that Messrs. Marchant, Thornton and Christopher- s m were alone able to get double figures. These three amateurs were responsible for 82 runs, and as there was one bye it will be noticed that the eight remaining batsmen together only made eleven runs. In the follow-on Mr. Marchant again hit freely for a time, and Messrs. Rashleigh, Wilson and Thornton also batted well, Mr. Rashleigh in particular showing admirable cricket. The last five batsmen, though, did little, and Su rrev had won soon after five o’clock on Friday by an innings and two runs. Abel, c F. Hearne, b W ootton .................. 31 Mr. J.
