Tho Essex eleven gained a highly creditable victory over a strongish eleven of Hants in this match, played at Leyton on Friday and Saturday last. This success was in a great measure due to the very effective bowling of Mr. Bishop, who in the two innings of Hants took sixteen wickets at an average cost,of exactly six runs. E s s e x . After having all the worst of the first hands the Gentlemen of Scotland played up well in the later stages of this match, begun at Edinburgh on Thursday, and were only beaten by eight wickets. The best features of the cricket of the losing side were the stand of Mr. Carrick and Lord George Scott in the follow-on, andthe bowling of Mr. Le Messurier in Yorkshire’s first innings. Lord George Scott batted in brilliant style for his 96, and thus added considerably to the high reputation he had already gained by his two fine displays in the Inter-University match.
