Cricket 1887
JULY 21,1887. CRICKET:^ A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME 287 M.C.C. & GROUND v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Though the eleven which represented the Marylebone Club was not very strong, the victory of Leicestershire in this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday last and two following days, was a most creditable one. Mainly through the excellent batting of Warren and Pougher, and the effective bowling of the latter and Mr. Arnall-Thompson, the county were able to get a lead of 22 runs on the first innings, and this advantage they increased by some generally good cricket when they batted a second time. At the finish M.C.C. wanted 286 to win, but the heavy rain of Friday caused the wicket on Saturday morning to be all in favour of the bowlers, and Pougher and Rylott had things all their own way. The former in the match took eleven wickets for 99 runs and scored in addition 94 runs, a most meritorious display of all - round cricket. Leicestershire won by 194 runs. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . The Northamptonshire eleven were beaten in their first match with Lancashire, played at Old Trafford on Friday and Saturday last, by ten wickets. Briggs was away, but other wise Lancashire had a fairly good team, in cluding F. H. Sugg, who, after representing Yorkshire and Derbyshire in turn, is h o tt qualified for Lancashire by residence. West batted well in the first innings of Nortliants and was also successful with the ball, taking four of the ten wickets in Lancashire’s first innings. The Bulls,Wrigley and Mr. Kingston showed to bestadvantage with the bat. Mold’s bowling was again of great service. Mr. Pye, a left-handed bowler from Lancaster, made his first appearance for Lancashire in this match. N o r t h a m p t o n s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings.
