286 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 21,1887. CHESHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. After a good fight on the first innings, the Cheshire eleven showed to great disadvantage in this match, played at Stockport, on Friday and Saturday, ana had all the worst of the drawn game. Lee, who scored 206 in the previous match, again batted brilliantly in Yorkshire’s second innings for 141, though he gave no less than five chances. Mr. J. Wilson, a recent addition to the Yorkshire eleven, also did good service both with bat and ball. In addition to a well played second score of 70, he got five wickets with his lobs for only 27 runs. When play ceased Cheshire wanted 346 runs to win with seven wickets to fall. The Yorkshire eleven were without Ulyett, Bates, and Peel, all of whom were represent ing the Players at the Oval, as well as Hunter. Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. As at Lord’s, the Gentlemen were seen to great disadvantage in this, the second of the two annual matches, played at Kennington Oval on Thursday last and two following days. The Players were rejjresented by the same eleven which had proved so successful at Lord’s, while there were only three changes on the side of the Gentlemen, Messrs. Sutthery and Newnham being substituted for Messrs. Marchant and Appleby, and Mr. Nepean for Mr. W. E. Roller, who was unable to play owing to an injury to his hand. Shrewsbury was again fortunate enough to win the toss, and the chances of the Gentlemen were still further reduced by their ill-luck in this impor tant respect. Messrs. Nepean and Newnham commenced the bowling, and the former’s curly ones soon proved successful in getting rid of two of the most dangerous batsmen— Shrewsbury and Gunn—for only seven runs. Ulyett and Read, though, took full advantage of an excellent wicket, and by capital cricket added 114 runs while they were together. Barnes, too, played well, and Bates hit with great vigour, though he ought to have been caught at least twice, once very early in his innings. When the Gentlemen went in Mr. Stoddart with some luck scored fast, and he was credited with forty of the fifty-five made at the fall of the first wicket. Though at the end of the first day the Gentlemen had scored 63 for two wickets, the bowling and fielding of the Players were so good that no great stand was made afterwards, and the innings only reached 161. Going in again in aminority of 178, Messrs. Stoddart and Grace again got runs quickly, and when rain stopped play for the day on Friday afternoon the score was 63 with two batsmen, Messrs. Nepean and Stod dart, out. On Saturday morning the wicket was slower after the rain, but it was not sufficiently affected to account for the poor display of the Gentlemen. The only real interest was while Messrs. Buckland and Sutthery were together on the fall of the seventh wicket. The former played up pluck- ily, but otherwise no serious opposition was offered to the bowling of the Players, particu larly of Barnes, who took six of the ten wickets in the second innings at a cost of 80 runs. The Players won by an innings and seven teen runs. In the two matches Barnes was credited with nineteen wickets at an expense of 171 runs, so that he contributed in no small measure to the double victory of the Players. Messrs. Nepean, Forster, Sutthery, Buckland, Philipson and Newnham made their first appearance for the Gentlemen at the Oval in this match. P l a y e r s .
