Cricket 1887

JULY 21, 1887. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 275 SURREY v. ESSEX. The Surrey eleven, who were, with the ex ception of Mr. W. E. Roller’s absence, in full strength, had an easy victory in this match, played at the Oval on Monday and Tuesday, winning by an innings and seven runs. Bastow, owing to an injury to his hand, was unable to take wicket for Essex, and Little wood, who acted occasionally as wicket keeper in Pilling’s absence for Lancashire two years ago, though not qualified yet by residence for Essex, was by permission of the Surrey Captain allowed to play. Surrey went in first, on a wicket not of the very best, and at one time seemed likely to be dismissed for a moderate score. Beaumont, who played exceedinglygood cricket, though, andLohmann made a very useful stand on the fall of the eighth wicket, and 80 runs were added while they were together. At the end of the first day, mainly through Mr. Buxton’s good batting, Essex had got 61 for the loss of only one wicket, and there seemed a chance of a fair score. On the following morning Mr. Buxton, though, found no-one to stay with him, and Beaumont and Lohmann bowled so well that the nine remaining wickets only added 60. Mr. Buxton was in two hours and ten minutes, and though he gave two chances, one at the outset of his innings, his 79 was an admirable display of cricket. Following on in a minority of 167 Essex fared badly, and half the wickets were down for 43. Mr. Green, Littlewood and Mr. Bishop, though, subse quently played up well, and in the end the total reached 160.
