T h e L ancashire eleven succeeded after som e very interestin g cricket, and after a m ost ex­ cising finish, in w in n in g this m atch, played at L o rd ’s on M onday and Tuesday, w ith only tw o w ickets to spare. M arylbbone, though represented b y a fa irly strong team , did not profit m aterially b y th e ch oice o f innings, and were ou t for a m oderate total of 155, to w hich M r. H . W , Forster, o f the O xford eleven, c o n ­ tributed 49. B a rlow and M r. E ccles w ere responsible for 132 o f L ancashire’s first total o f 216, and the form er’s 76 was quite up to his best form . H e w as at th e w ickets altogether tw o hours and threrj-quarters. G oing in a second tim e in a m in ority of 61, M arylebone m ade a g ood com m en cem ent, and the first balsm en, M r. G race and Scotton, p u t on 94 before the latter, w hose share w as on ly 28, w as run out. T h ou gh at luncheon on Tuesday the total w as 116 w ith on ly one batsm an out, on resum in g W atson bow led w ith m o3t re­ m arkable success, and an extraordinary collapse w as the result, the last nine w ickets being dism issed for an addition of on ly 26 runs. W atson ’s analysis at th e clo se o f the innings w as quite ou t of th e com m on . H e delivered 79 balls for ten runs and six w ickets r an exceptionally brilliant per­ form an ce, though the ground tow ards the end of the gam e helped the ball m aterially. Lan­ cashire had on ly 82 to w in, bu t as th e ground was there w as every chance, it w as th ou gh t, of a good finish. S o it proved, fo r M r. N epean’s b ow lin g puzzled th e batsm en very n rich , and the cou n ty on ly w on w ith tw o w ickets to spare— a result due in no sm all m easure to the plucky play of M r. E ccles at th e finish. M r. G race, w h o com pleted his th irty-n in th year on M onday, w as successful, it w ill be seen, w ith both bat and ball. H is second innings o f 73 w as free from a chance, and in addition he took seven w ickets fo r 66 runs. M r. Nepear-, th e O xford bow ler, w as also o f great use to M .C.C. The ch ief features of th e m atch w ere the lon g stand o f U lyett and P reston and the effective bo\vling of B ates at th e close. U lyett and Preston added 150 for th e sixth w icket, and the latter’s 93, w hich contained n o actual chance, w as th e m ore gratifyin g as this season he has n ot been at all in luck.
