The scarcity of good bowling of late years has handicapped the Gentlemen severely in their annual meetings with the Players, and the result of the first of the two matches played at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday, showed effectually the great advantage the professionals have just at the present time in this important department of the game. The weakness of the Gentlemen in this respect was, indeed, proved unmistakably, when recourse was obliged to be had to a veteran like Mr. Appleby who, though very success ful in the second match of the Jubilee Week at Lord’s, ought hardly, had there been any young talent, to have been good enough for the best match of the year. As it was, when it was found that the Players, who- are very stroDg all-round just now, won the toss, the chances of the Gentlemen seemed to be any thing but hopeful, and indeed, it soon became evident that they would have great trouble even to avert a defeat. A heavy shower pre vented a commencement until 12.30 on Mon day, but Shrewsbury and Ulyett, when the game did begin, playedwith great care, and the soore at luncheon time was 56 with both bats men still in. Though the wicket did not play well, Shrewsbury continued to bat with great judgment and he did not retire until th© score had reached 246 for five wickets. Of this sum he had himself contributed 111, and it is worthy of special remark that this is the third hundred he has scored in the three innings he has had at Lord’s this year. He had been batting more than four hours, and considering that the wicket was not at all easy, and he gave no actual chance, it will be seen that his performance was in every way worthy of his nigh reputation. At the close of the day Briggs hit freely, but with some luck, and when play ceased the total was 337 with only seven wickets down. On the second morning Briggs and Lohmann hit well, and the former was not out at the close for 66, on the whole a fine display of free cricket. Messrs, Grace and Stoddart began well, for the Gentlemen, and the score was 38 before the latter was caught from Barnes, who had just displaced Lohmann. Barnes proved quite irresistible, and at luncheon he had taken six wickets at a cost of only seven runs—remarkable bowlin g against such batsmen. The two Oxonians, Messrs. Forster and Philipson, made a useful stand, but no one else did anything, and as Mr. Roller was unable to bat owing to a severe injury to his hand in stopping a hard return from Bates, the innings closed with the fall of the ninth wicket for 102. Following on in a minority of 294 Messrs. Grace and Hawke batted in their best form, and later on Messrs. Marchant andBuckland hit freely. The lastpair added 50 runs forthe seventh wicket, andMr. Marchant was not out at the close, having played excellent cricket for his 33. The Players, it will be seen, won by an innings and 123 runs, Barnes took in all ten wickets for 58 runs A , Shrewsbury, c Read, b Grace ...111 G, Ulyett, c and b G race......... ............. 36 W.
