Cricket 1887

JULY 7, 1887, CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 243 YORKSHIRE v. SURREY. U l y e t t ’ s B e n e f it . Particular interest was attached to the first match of the season between these Coun ties, begun at Sheffield, on Monday, firstly, because each County had only lost one match this year, and secondly, because the fixture was for the benefit of a most deservedly popu lar professional, George Ulyett, who has ren dered sterling service to Yorkshire Cricket since 1873. Both sides were r/ell represented, though Surrey had not its full strength in the absence of Mr. Key, who was doing duty for Oxford in the Inter-University match at Lord’s. The Southerners, who won the toss, began badly, and two of the best wickets were down for22. When Mr Read joined Mr Shuter, however, things underwent a change for the better, and by excellent cricket the two Amateurs added 111 runs while they were to gether. Another very usefulstand was made by Lohmann and Wood, both of whom batted really well. While they were partners 105 runs were added for the seventh wicket, and Wood proved to be the highest scorer on the side, with a most praiseworthy inningsof 70, which occupied him two hours and a half. Yorkshire had the worst of the luck on Tuesday, and were not seen to the best advantage. Heavy rain during Monday night caused the wicket to be all in favour of the bowlers on the second morning, and in additionthe light was atcertain periods of the day very bad. Lohmann bowled with such success in Yorkshire’s first innings, that Bates proved to be the highest scorer of the side with 22, and (the total only reached 111, six wickets falling to Lohmann at a cost of only 48 runs. In the follow-on they made a better start, and thanks to some excellent cricket by Wade and Ulyett, the score was 98 for three wickets. Wade, who was fifth out at 143, got his 57 without a mistake, but the later batsmen did little, and the innings closed yesterday morning for 175, leaving Surrey the winners by an innings and 15 runs. Just hpfore the close of play on Tuesday, the light beoam 3so bad that the umpires postponed the game for fifteen minutes. As many as 12,259 persons paid for admission to the ground on Monday, and 7,220 on Tuesday,so that Ulyett’s benefit should be a successful one, as every one will be pleased to hear. S u r r e y .
