Cricket 1887

242 CEICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. JULY 7, 1887. chance that Cambridge mightfavert a defeat. This change, though, settled the question effectually, and taking the last five wickets in eighty-one balls for only fourteen runs he fairly landed the victory for Oxford. This summer Mr. Buckland has been in consistently good form. His all-round cricket has been of the greatest service to the Oxford eleven, and in their recent matches his play has been of such a high character as to fully justify his selection to represent the Gentlemen against the Players, at the Oval. His batting and bowling on that ground against Surrey last week were alike successful, and in addition to a brilliant first score of 148 he fairlywon the match with his bowling, taking five Surrey wickets in the second innings at a cost of only twenty-five runs. Mr. Buckland is a dangerous bat, for ho can hit well round when he gets in, as he showed conclusively at the Oval recently. He bowls slow round arm, and as he keeps a good length and is always well on the wicket he requires careful watching. We may add that Mr. Buckland has four times in minor matches taken all ten wickets in the innings. As he is besides an excellent field anywhere he is as a rule seen to advantage at all points of 'the game. In other sports Mr. Buckland has proved his skill. He represented Marlborough at'Racquets —and with great credit—in the competition for the Public Schools Challenge Cup, at Prince’s, and subsequently did good service for Oxford in both the single and double matches. H a was also a good football player at Marlborough, though an injury caused him to retire from further participation in our winter game. THE SCORE BOOK.
