Cricket 1887

234 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. JUNE SO, 1887. Chiswick Park last week. I believe I am right in saying that this is the fifth time Mr. Webbe has gone in first, and carried out his bat for Middlesex. The five occasions are as under: 1875.—at rrince's, v. Notts, 97 not out. 1876.—at Nottingham, v. Notts, 1882.—at Sheffield, v. Yorkshire, 62not out. 1884.—Oral, y . Surrey, 83 not out 18^7.—ChiswicliPark,v. OxfordUniv.,63 notout I have not seen a much more curious thing for some time in an important match than was witnessed at the Oval yesterday afternoon, while Surrey were batting against Oxford University. Maurice Read hit a ball from Mr. Buck land hard to mid-on, where Mr. Whitby made a good attempt to catch him, though he failed to hold it after three tries. The very next ball, though, Read hit again to the same field, this time not quite so hard, and the Surrey professional had to retire. It is not often a batsman gives two chances in successive balls in the very same place, and from precisely the same stroke. The chances of the two Universities in the great struggle to be commenced at Lord’s on Monday next are naturally creating great diversity of opinion. On paper there certainly does not appear to be very much to choose between the teams, and it is generally conceded that both are above the average in batting. Oxford’s victory over Surrey was well earned, and I am inclined myself to be lieve that they are all-round the better eleven. Whether Mr. "Wreford-Brown, who injured his finger badly at the Oval, will be well enough to represent Oxford seems just now doubtful. If he is the Oxford eleven will be the same as opposed Surrey, while it is hardly likely that Mr. Marchant, the Cambridge captain, will alter the eleven which played at the Oval, except to substitute Mr. E. Crawley or Mr. F. Meyrick-Jones for Mr. G. Kemp. Whether it was judicious to leave out the last-named, though he had hardly got into form by the Surrey match, will, I think, be open to doubt. In fact I am inclined to think the policy would gener ally be voted questionable. SCORE BOOK— Continued. ELM v. JUNIOR MIDDLESEX. Played at Eton and Middlesex on June 25. E l m . Ruscoe, c E. Lancashire, though, who won the toss, had the best of the luck in going in first, and as the ground favoured the bowlers on the second day, the Kentish batsmen were at a disadvantage. Lancashire were in a greater part of Monday for a total of 280, of which Briggs, Mr. Lancashire and Robinson con tributed one half. When play began on Tues day morning, Kent had lost one batsman for 31 runs, but after this the bowlers had things much their own way, and nineteen Kent wickets fell before five o’clock, for an aggregate of 187 runs. The Lancashire bowling was shared by Briggs, Barlow, and Watson, and the two first named had excellent figures, Briggs getting seven wrickets for 70, Barlow six for 31runs. Lancashire won by an innings and 62 runs. L a n cash ire . Mr. O. P. Lancashire, run out ................ 45 Barlow, b G. Hearne 19 Mr. J. Eccles, st Pen tecost, b Martin ... 33 J.
