JUNE 30,188?. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 229 MIDDLESEX v. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. An extraordinary performance by Messrs. Key and Philipson for Oxford was the great feature of this match—a revival of a once popular fixture—played on the ground of the Chiswick Park Club during the latter half of last week. Though Oxford won the toss the grounddid net play very well at the outset, and at luncheon five of the best wickets were down for 76. At 104 for six wickets Mr. Philipson joined Mr. Key, and then ensued a remarkable stand. At the end of the first day the two batsmen, who had then added 331, were still together, and nine more were puton before Mr. Philipson was caught. During their part nership the score hadbeen increased by asmany as 340 runs, the largest number made by two batsmen in a first-class match. Mr. Key, who was last man out, achieved the distinction of the highest score of the season in an important match. He was missed early in his innings at third man, but gave no other actualchance, and his display was in every way a remarkable one. In his 281 were thirty-eight fours. Mr. Philipson, too, deserves the highest praise for his performance. Though missed when he had got 24, and again at 104, he played very fine cricket, fully confirming thegreat promise he had shown at Eton. When Middlesex went in Mr. Webbe alone offered any great resistance to the Oxford bowlers. Going in first he carried out his bat, making 63 of the total of 119 without a mistake. In the follow-on the county showed to better advantage, but were never able to get near the University total, and werebeaten by an innings and 229 runs. O xf o r d U n iv e r s it y . Gresson, Mr. F.
