Cricket 1887
228 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JUNE 80, 1887. M.C.C. & G. v. NOTTS. Though they had all the worst of the early part of the game, Notts, who were without Shrewsbury, Gunn, Scotton, and Mr. H. B. Daft, played up pluckily, and succeeded in beating a moderate eleven of M.C.C. in this match, begun at Lord’sjon Thursday, on Satur day with only 28 runs to spare. The County team were 96 behind on the first innings, but on going in again Mr. Dixon, Flowers, and Attewell were all seen to great advantage, and it was mainly to their efforts that Notts was able to reach the very respect able total of 270. The tail indeed shaped very badly, as the last six wickets only added 16 runs. Mr. Dixon, who has not played for his county for some time, was three hours at the wickets. He gave one chance to mid-on when he had got 69, but otherwise there was no flaw in a capital display of batting. M.C.C. had 175 to win, but no one except Mr. Hawke and George Heame made any great show against Shacklock’s bowling, and the County was able to claim a very creditable victory. Shacklock bowled with remarkable success in the second innings of M.C.C. He took eight of the ten wickets at a cost of only 32 runs, a fine performance. N o t ts . First Innings. Mr. J. A. The Liverpool eleven gained a creditable victory in this match, played on the ground of the Liverpool Club, on Thursday last and two following days, by 38 runs. The result was in a great measure due to the fine bowl ing of Richardson and Shore, though the Yorkshiremen were unlucky in having to go in for the fourth innings when the wicket had broken up, and was all in favour of the bowlers. Richardson, who hails from Notts, took in the match nine Yorkshire wickets for 98 runs. L iv e r p o o l . First Innings. Mr. E. E. Steel, c Hunter, b Bates ..................... Townsend, Page and Brain as well as Woof and Painter, put only a very moderate eleven into the field at Moreton-in-the-Marsh on Thursday last. On the other hand Surrey, except for the absence of Mr. K. J. Key, were in full strength, and as in addition they had the advantage of the ground in going in first the result was hardly ever in doubt. Surrey did not make a very good start, and at luncheon time the score was 82 for the loss of three wickets. Thanks, though, to the free hitting of Maurice Read, and later on of Lohmann and Wood, whose seventy-five is the highest score he has as yet made for his County, the total reached the respectable sum of 336 before the tenth wicket fell. But for Mr. W. G. Grace, Gloucestershire would have made a poor show. As it was he scored 58 out of 91 from the bat, and his innings, which lasted two hours and a half, was free from a mistake. Jones did a remarkable bowling performance for Surrey. His analysis showed 27 overs, of which eight- teen were maidens—for 20 runs and seven wickets—exceptionally good figures even though the wicket gave him considerable help. Following on in aminority of 239, Gloucester shire fared badly, and it was mainly a useful stand of Messrs. Griffiths and Newnham for the ninth wicket that enabled them to top their previous score. Surrey won by an innings and 104 runs. In the match altogether Jones took eleven Gloucestershire wickets for 54 runs. Mr. Pullen re-appeared in the Gloucestershire Eleven after an absence of two years. Mr. Troup and Bendall made their first appearance for Gloucestershire in this match. S u r r e y .
