JtTNE 23,1887. “ The following,” writes an old Harro vian, “ is copied from a Standard of last week:—- “ George Cherry, Esq, died at his residence, Denford House, near Hungerford, Jane 12, 1887. “ He was a magistrate and Chairman of the Berkshire Sessions. He played with some success in the Harrow Eleven in 1840, and subsequently in that of Oxford in 1841, ’42, and ’43. His age was not given in the Standard, but as he was head of Harrow School wliea he left at Midsummer in 1840 he was then probably 19. His age, therefore, would bo possibly at his death 06. He gained a Scholarship while at Harrow, but I forget which, though I remember it being awarded to him by Wordsworth in the Speech-room.” SCORE BOOK— Continued. WEST WRATTING PARK v. MR. C. The Surrey eleven were again seen to great advantage in this match, begun at the Oval on Monday last. Winning the toss they were in all the first day, scoring 454 runs for the loss of only six wickets. The innings was not finished until the total had been raised to 543, of which number W. W. Read, who carried out his bat, had contributed no less than 244. This performance was a most remarkable one, following as it did his score of 247 against Lancashire at Manchester last Friday, and we believe his two successive scores of over two hundred in important matches are without a parallel. He was batting altogether five hours and twenty minutes, and with the exception of one chance when he had made 186 there was no mistake in an extraordinary display of cricket. The University made a good start, and Messrs. Buxton, Marchant, Thomas, Ford and Sutthery all plaj’ed so freely that the Surrey bowlers had rather a bad time of it. The tail, though, shaped badly, and Jonts bowled so well that none of the iast four bats men got double figures. When they went in again Mr. Marchant scored very fast and when play ceased on Tuesday 105 had been made in an hour and five minutes with only one wicket down, Mr. Marchant not out 67. Yesterday, however, Messrs. Ford, Orford andHale alone made any stay and Surrey won by an innings and 67 runs. In all 1,019 runs were made for thirty wickets. Mr. Bowden kept wicket for Surrey in place of Wood, who had injured his finger. S u r r e y . Abel, c Martineau, b Sutthery.............. 92 Mr. J.
