Cricket 1887

JUNfc 23, 1887. CftlCKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. 215 NOTTS v. YOEKSHIBE. The run-getting in this match, begun on the Trent Bridge Ground on Thursday, presented a curious contrast to that at Manchester between Lancashire and Surrey, or at Brighton between Sussex and Cambridge University. At Brigh ton 1,197 runs were scored for 25 wickets, at Manchester 980 for 30 wickets. The match, which was for the benefit of John Selby, a pro fessional who had done good service for Notts since 1870, was only moderately attended, and it is feared that the proceeds will only be small. The chief features of the game itself were the excellent all-round cricket of Ulyett and Peel, and the fine batting of Mr. Hawke and Wade for Yorkshire, and the good start made by Shrewsbury and Scotton when Notts went in. Ulyett was in rare form both with bat and ball. In the two innings he made 113 runs, and, iu addition, took four wickets of Notts at a cost of 52 runs. Peel scored 34 for once out, and was credited with five wickets for 37runs. Mr. Hawke found a useful partner in Wade on the third day, and 56 were added while they were together. The former, though missed twice, when he made 29 and 36 respec tively, played in his best form, and his 78 not out was a very creditable display. Score: Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings.
