214 CRlCKEt: A 'WEEKLY BECORD OF THE GAME. TONE 43,188? SUSSEX v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. Some extraordinary run-getting was wit nessed in this match, played on the Sus9ex County Ground, at Brighton, in the latter part of last week. In all 1,197 runs were scored in the three days, for the loss of only twenty- fivewickets, giving an average of nearly 48 runs for each wicket. There were two scores of a hundred in the first “ hands,” by Jesse Hide and Humphreys for Sussex, by Messrs. Bridgeman and Martineau for the University. The performance of the Cam bridge eleven, and of the two amateurs named in particular, was a most creditable one. To go in against a score of 451 and head it by 83 would alone have been praiseworthy, T>ut the value of the feat was increased by the fact that most of the runs were made by the “ tail.” The last four wickets, indeed, were responsible for as many as 387 of the aggregate of 534, and Messrs. Bridgeman and Martineau during their partnership put on 193. In estimating the value of this stand it must be remembered that this is the first year of each in the eleven, and that the game was apparently altogether against their side when they became partners. Mr. Bridgeman carried out his bat for 162, having been five hours at the wickets without a mistake. The aggregate of 1,197 in this match is not the highest in a first-class match in England, bein? 20 short of that in the match between Middlesex and Oxford Univer sity, at Prince’s, in 1876.
