Cricket 1887
CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. JUNE 2, 1887. M‘Donnell, was in some way mixed up with the row in which Barnes injured his hand, it will be well, perhaps, if I repro duce the following remarks from the pen of “ Ifelix ” in one of the April numbers of the Australasian newspaper. I have it from Barnes himself that, though Percy M‘Donnell was in the Oxford Hotel at the time the altercation took place, M'Donnell had nothing whatever to do with it. The tronble was between Barnes and Hiddilston. Those who know Percy M‘Donnell will esti mate at its proper worth the celebrated emanation from the pen of the Sydney corres pondent of the London paper referred to. The correspondent would do well in future to be sure as to the truth of his matter before committing it to paper, especially when its publication casts a totally undeserved imputa tion upon as genial a cricketer as Australia or England has ever produced. W h e n was the last occasion on which Surrey beat Notts on the Trent Bridge Ground ? I can remember the victories of 1861 and 1864, and particularly the latter occasion, when Shepherd, the last man had to go in, and Surrey won with only one wicket to spare. It was odd, by-the-way, that Notts should have been beaten at the Oval in 1865, and by the same narrow majority. I have not had the opportunity to go through the records to make sure of the date, but I cannot for the moment remember any win at Not tingham since 1864. GRANVILLE (LEE) v. WILLESDEN.
