Cricket 1887
JUNE 2, 1887. CBICKET: A WEEKLY RECOKD OF THE GAME. 167 SUSSEX v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE, A moderate eleven of Gloucestershire made a good fight against a strong team of Sussex in this match, begun at Brighton on Mon day, andj werej only beaten yesterdayl by four wickets. The game was very even and interesting throughout, and some capital cricket was shown on both sides. Gloucester shire, who went ijj first, only made a moderate start, and six wickets were down for 117. Some free hitting by Messrs. Croome, the Oxonian, and Cole, however, changed the game materially, and 88 were added during their partnership. Thanks to the sound cricket of Mr. Newham, who was in three hours and a half for his score of 108, and Jesse Hide, who between them scored 190 out of 245 from the bat, Sussexwere able tohead their opponentsby 18 runs. The Jtwo batsmen named while |in together, added 112 runs. In the end Sussex had 178 to win, and with four of the best batsmen out for 60, there seemed every chance of an interesting finish. When Mr. McCor mick and Jesse Hide got together, however, the Gloucestershire bowling was freelyhit, and their ^partnership, which produced 87 runs, practically won the match for Sussex. Mr, McCormick’s 51 included ten fours. Hide scored 126 in the match for once out. G l o u c e s t e r s h ir e . First Innings. Second Innings. Mr. W . G. Grace, c Hum phreys, b A.
