After making a very poor start, at Trent Bridge, on Monday, the Surrey Eleven succeeded in defeating Notts yesterday with 157 runs to spare. Both counties had their selected teams, and the cricket proved interesting and exciting to the very last, Surrey only winning with fifteen minutes to spare. The wicket played queerly at the out set, and Surrey made a very bad start, six of the best batsmen being out for only twenty- seven runs. A very useful stand, however, by Maurice Read and Wood, who put on 53 runs for the seventh wicket, improved matters considerably, though the total ultimately only reached 115. At the finish of the second day, Notts had made 46 for the loss of two wickets, but on the following morning Lohmann and Bowley bowled with such effect that no one but Sherwin, who is acting as Captain of the Notts Eleven this season in place of Shrewsbury resigned, made any stand, and the remaining batsmen only added 43 runs. In spite of the good bowling of Notts, when Surrey went in again Mr. Key and Abel put on 66 for the firstwicket, and some fine batting subsequently by Messrs. Roller and W. W. Read enabled them to make a very respectable show. As there was every chanco of winning and none of losing the later bats men of Surrey got out, and Notts had to go in, just before lunch, with 316 to win, an impos sible task in the time. Their only chanco was to save the match, but, with the excep tion of Gunn, who played a very fine innings of 72, no one offered much resistance to the bowling of Lohmann, and the innings elosed for 158, leaving Surrey in possession of a most creditable victory by 157 runs.
