Cricket 1887

MAY 26, 1887 CBiCKE'f A WEEKLY EECOiti) OF THE GAME. 155 Cricket at Cambritrge. MR. A. J. WEBBE’S ELEVEN v. CAM BRIDGE UNIVERSITY. After having very considerably the worst of the first “ hands” in this match, begun at Cambridge on Monday, the University played up pluckily and were able to get three of Mr. Webbe’s eleven out in the second innings be fore the winning hit were made. Mr. Webbe was origi nally to have brought a team of amateur?, but ashis bowling was weak a place was found for Rawlin, who, as will be seen, proved of the greatest service with bat as well as ball. Cambridge, who went in first, were dismissed for 131, of which 90 were made by Messrs. Kemp—whom every one will be pleased to see in the University eleven—and Sutthery. The latter, who has been very successful this term, went in second wicket down and made 55 out of 123 scored duringhis stay, carrying out his bat after a display of good cricket. The chief feature of the first in nings of Mr. Webbe’s Eleven was the stand of Mr. Vernon and Rawlin, who added 105 runs for the sixth wicket. Both hit well, but were indebted to mistakes in the field. In a minority of 171 Cambridge opened their second innings badly, and seven wickets were down for 166 runs. A determined stand by Messrs. Ford and Martineau, however, altered the aspect of the game altogether, and 87 runs were added for the eighth wicket, chiefly by the brilliant hitting of the former. In his finely hit score of 79, which only occupied about an hour and a quarter, were thirteen fours. Mr. Webbe’s Eleven won eventually by seven T7ickets. C a m b r id g e U n iv e r s it y .
