The Sussex eleven showed to great disad' vantage in their first match of the season against Lancashire, begun at Manchester on Monday, and were beaten before the end of the second day by ten wiokets. Messrs. F. M. Lucas, W. Newham, F. Thomas, and G. Brann were absent from the Sussex team, and Messrs. A. G. Steel, H. B. Steel, and O. P. Lancashire from their opponents, so that neither County had its full strength. Mr. Cotterill showed steady oricket each time, but with the exception of Quaife, who added con- eiderably to the reputation gained by his good show against M.C.C. and Ground at Lord’s last week by an exceptionally good performance in the second innings, no one else did anything noteworthy with the bat. Six of the eleven failed to make a run in the second innings, and but for Quaife, who deserves the highest credit for his excellent batting, they would have made a very poor show. Quaife went in first, and was not out at the end of the innings, which had lasted two hours. Watson’s bowling was remarkably effective for Lancashire. He took altogether eleven wickets at a cost of only 43 runs. Briggs, in the second innings, got six wickets for 36 run3. Bean was, as will be noticed, the most successful bowler on the Sussex side. Baker, who played for the first time for Lan cashire in this match, is, we believe, G. R. Baker, who has been actively identified with the Malton Club. S u sse x . First Innings. W. YORKSHIRE. Though Yorkshire sent its regular team to Lord’s on Monday to meet the Marylebone Club, the latter had the best of the game throughout. The match, limited in conse quence of the Derby to two days, was finished before the time fixed for drawing stumps on Tuesday evening, in favour of M.C.C. by ten wickets. Marylebone, although Mr. W. G. Grace was prevented from playing, had a strong eleven. Wootton, owing to a severe injury to his bowling hand while batting, was, however, unable to bowl more than one over, and the loss of his services placed the side at a disadvantage, making their success the more meritorious. Marylebone, who went in first, remained at the wickets till past five o’clock on Monday for a total of 248, of which four batsmen contributed 178. Flowers was the chief run-getter, taking out his bat for a well- got score of 63 not out. Yorkshire just failed to save the follow-on by one run, otherwise the match would in all probability have been drawn. The chief features in the Yorkshire batting were the good hitting of Preston in the first, and Peel in the second innings. The latter, in particular, deserved great credit. He made 54 of the last 76 runs got by York shire, and carried out his bat. Chatterton and Pougher were the most successful bowlers for M.C.C. M.C.C. & G. W. Scotton, b Ulyett 11 W.
