134 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. MAY 19,1887 Cricket at Camfoxtr^. UNIVERSITY v. M r . C. I. THORNTON’S ELEVEN. As usual the cricket season at Cambridge opened with amatoh against an eleven brought down by Mr. C, I. Thornton, The game, which commenoed on Thursday last, wai completed at seven o’clock on the following evening, the time having been extended so as to allow the game to be finished on the second day. Mr. Thornton’seleven, though somewhat short of bowling, was a strongish one, and tho victory of the University by ten wickets was the more creditable inasmuch asMr. Marchant, the Captain, was the only member of last year’s eleven able to play on this occasion, the ten other places being filled by seven seniors and three Freshmen, Messrs. E. Crawley, H. Hale, and F. G. J, Ford, all of whom showed very promising cricket last season. Winning the toss, the University went in first, and were in most of the first day for a very respectable score of 248. Of thesethree batsmen, F. Mey- rick-Jones, W. Greenstock, and W. C.Bridge- man contributed 160. Meyrick-Jones and Bridgeman added 77 runs while they were together, and both played capital cricket. Tho former’s 67 in particular was in every way a creditable innings, including eight fours and several threes. Mr. Thornton’s eleven was strong in batting, but the bowling of the University, notably of the two fast bowlers, N. K. Stephen and A. M. Sutthery, was so good that Mr. Walker and Humphreys were the only batsmen able to get double figures in each innings. Messrs. Stephen and Sutthery each took seven wickets for the University, though the latter had much the better analysis, his only costing 62 runs, while those of Mr! Stephenwere obtained at an expense of 97runs. C a m b r id g e U n iv e r s it y . A. M. Sutthery, b Mee ..................... 8 E. Crawley, b Cross land .....................24 W.
