Cricket 1887
132 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. MAY 19, 1887. MARYLEBON3 CLUB AND GROUND v. DERBYSHIRE. The Derbyshire Eleven opened their season inauspiciously last week, being beaten by a strong Eleven of the Marylebone Club in this match, played at Lord’s on Thursday and Fri day, by 146 runs. The County was not repre sented as well as it could have been, Messrs. L. C. Docker and A. H. J. Cochrane being absent, as well as F. II. Sugg, who, it is said, desires to play for Lancashire when the term of two years required to furnish him with a residential qualification for that County is completed in July. The Derbyshire Eleven included two new players, Hulme, the fast left-handed bowler who proved so successful in the Colts’ matches at the end of last season, and Bagshaw, a right-handed slow bowler. There were also two new additions to the staff of the Marylebone Club in Rawlin, who has bowled with such effect for Lincoln Lindum during the last two or three years, and Pougher, who mada such a sensational debut for Leicestershire last summer. Mary lebone, who went in first, had an advantage of 62 runs at the end of an innings, a result due to the excellent .cricket shown by George Hearne. Going in third wicket down at 21, he was not out at the finish, having scored 70 of the 110 got during his stay. Mr. Wright and Sugg made 85 for the first wicket of Derbyshire with some luck, but afterwards no one except Chatterton, who batted in his best form, made any stand, six of the eleven failing to score. At the finish the county eleven had to get 182 to win, but the bowling of Wootton, Rawlin and Pougher, of the first named in particular, proved too much for them, and no one was able to reach double figures. The bowlers, indeed, had all the best of the game, and Cropper, Wootton, Pougher, Rawlin and George Hearne were all seen to advantage. M.C.C. a n d G r o u n d . First Innings. Mr.A.N.
