I t is a matter for regret that the sodden state of the ground at Lord’s last Thursday should have prevented the Middlesex Colts match being anything like a reliable test of the form of the Seventeen Youngsters. Messrs. B. S. Lucas (if I mistake not, the left-handed batsman, who was captain of the Merchant Taylors’ School eleven two years ago) and A. L. Kemp, though they did not get many runs, both showed very promising form. H. Bryant kept wicket decidedly well, and the fielding was above the average. The piece of fielding by Kemp, which run out ~W. G., was very brilliant, and a very good running catch by Halford at long-leg was notice­ able. Of Ithe bowlers, Birch (fast round) certainly showed up the best, and Ash
