118 CRICKET A WEEKLY EECOED OE THE GAME. MAY 12,1887 Cricket nt Cambridge. THE SENIORS’ MATCH. Rain interfered with the play in the opening match of the University season, commenced at Cambridge on Thursday last. Two strong- ish Elevens of Seniors were placed in the field, under the captaincy respectively of Messrs. F. Marchant, the Captain, and C. D. Buxton, the Hon. Sec. of the University Club. Some fairly good play was shown, and the finish proved singularly exciting, the good bowling of Messrs. Martineau, the Uppingham Captain of 1885, and N. K. Stephen, who bowled with great success for Fettes College inl884, enabling Mr. Buxton’s Eleven to gain amost creditable victory with only five runs to spare. Messrs. H. E, Crawley, the Harrow Captain of 1883, F. Meyrick-Jones, one of the best bats at Marlborough in 1885, W. C. Bridge- man, and W. Greenstock, captain of the Fettes Eleven in 1884, were the most successful bats men for their respective sides, and Messrs. Mackinnon, Sutthery, who very nearly got his blue last year, Martineau and Stephen all showed up well with the ball. Mr. Sutthery got ten of the eleven wickets in the second innings of Mr. Buxton’s side. Altogether he took fourteen wickets at a cost of only sixty runs, a very creditable performance. M a . C. D . Mr Marchant’s side won this match, begun on Monday, yesterday afternoon, after a very close finish, by four runs. Some good all round cricket was shown on both sides. Two Old Harrovians, J. S. Robinson, who, though he showed capital crioket for Skegness against the Australians last September, failed to get into the School eleven, and H. E. Crawley, were the most successful batsmen for their respective sides. The best bowlers were F, G. J. Ford, Hale, Young and Hughes-Games. M b . M a r c h a n t ’ s S id e .
