FIRST MATCH.—v. STATEN ISLAND CLUB. The team of English Amateurs captained by Mr. W. E. Roller, commenced their first matoh (12a side) on September 1, on the ground of the Staten Island Club, New York. Their opponents, the Staten Island Club, included several cricketers known to Englishmen, among them Mr. Cyril Wilson, whilom of Somersetshire, Butler, who played for Notts some years ago, and Lane, another Notts pro fessional, who has been engaged in America for several seasons. Mr. Roller won the to3s and the Englishmen were in for the greater part of the first day. Messrs. Key and Gobb both batted freely, and later on Mr. Rotherham hit vigorously, the last-named carrying out his bat for 25. When play ceased on the first night, Staten Island had lost four wickets for 50, and this number was only increased by 24 before the innings closed. The collapse was attributable to the very effective bowling of Mr. Cottrell, who took the last seven wickets in fourteen overs at an expense of only five runs. In the follow-on Mr. Rotherham’s fast deliveries were as successful, and he also was credited with seven wickets, costing 25runs against 17 of Mr. Cottrell. The result was a decisive victory for the English team by an .nnings and 49 runs E nglish G entlemen . H. W. Bainbridge, c Wilson, b M’Gregor 29 T. R. Hine-Haycock, b Lane ... ........ 8 K. J.
