Cricket 1886
CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. SEPT. 1(5, 1886; of his 41 against Yorkshire, at Huddersfield, provedtobe his bestcontribution for the county last year. It was not, indeed, by any means one of his most successful seasons, and his aggre gate for twenty-two completed innings was only 327, an average of under fourteen and a half runs. Owing to the requirements of business Mr. Docker was not able to play in all the matches arranged on behalf of the Derby shire County Club for 1886. He was, too, hardly in his very best vein for run-getting, a fact the more noticeable by reason of his heavy scoring for the Smethwick Club in the Bir mingham Challenge Cup, which gave him an average of seventy-nine as the result of six innings. Though he scored over forty twioe, 43 v. Gloucestershire at Derby, and 44 against Yorkshire at Holbeck, his really best perform ance of the year was against Surrey at the Oval. In this match in Derbyshire’s second innings he hit with remarkable vigour, and as many as 64 of the 109 runs got during his stay were from his bat. Mr. Docker is a very dangerous batsman if once settled down. Of powerful build he hits particularly hard all round, and though his defence is cretainly good his reputation has been chiefly based on his capacity for hitting, which is much above the ordinary run. There are, indeed, few faster scorers when he (gets really in. He bowls very fast round-arm, and though erratic, his delivery makes him at times anything but agreeable when the ground is not in good order, and he has been indeed, of use as a change. In the field he is not only reliable, but a hard worker, as he is in everything connected with orioket. SOUTHBOROUGH CLUB. B A T T IN G A V E R A G E S .
