Cricket 1886

410 .CRIOKET: A WEEKLY RECORD O F THE GAME. SEPT. 9, 1886. HAMPSHIRE v. SURREY. . County cricket was brought to a close fdr the year with the completion of this match, begun on Thursday last on the Hampshire ground at Southampton. Surrey, who werecap tained byMr. W.W. Read, in tlie absence of Mr. John Shuter, lost the loss, and Hampshire of course took the innings. Mr. Seymour was dismissed when he had made 7, but Messrs. Forster, one of the Eton eleven of 1885,who had shown excellent:cricket earlier in the week against the Gentlemen at Scarborough, and Powell made'a good stand, and by excellent cricket 67 runs were added before the latter was bowled. Rain prevented further play after lunch, when the score was 93 for two wickets. Mr. Lacey plaved well on Friday morning, but no one else did much, and the innings closed for an addition of 73 runs. Surrey started ■well, thanks to the good cricket of their earlier batsmen, and at one time'their score was a hundred with only three batsmen out. The wicket as it dried, however, played very falsely, and with the exception of tne goOdplayof Mr. Bowden, who carried out his bat for an excell ent 31, there was nothing else noteworthy in theinnings, which closed on Saturdaymorning for four runs less than the Hampshire total. Hampshire, when they went in the second time, also had to bat on a drying ground, and Loh- inann bowled with such success that they were all out for 71, the young professional taking 7 wickets for 21 runs, a great performance. A word of praise is also due to Wood, whose wicket-keeping was one of the best features of the match. In the second innings of Hamp shire he had a hand in the dismissal of five batsmen, three stumped and two caught. Surrey with 76 to win, sent in Mr. Bowden and Abel, and these two batsmen got the runs in just overthe hour. Surrey won accordingly with ten wickets to spare. H ampshire . First Innings.
