Cricket 1886

898 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. SEPT. 9,1886. match. This summer Hearne’s batting has again been of the greatest service to Kent, and his average for twenty-six completed innings is the very creditable one of nearly twenty- five runs. Some of his later performances have been particularly noteworthy. At Graves end, in the second innings of the return match against Middlesex, with his brother George he added 226 for the second wicket, and his score of 142 was the highest made for Kent this summer. His brilliant hitting at the close of the game eleven days later, too, contributed greatly to the creditable victory secured over Lancashire in the last home match of the Kent season. This success he followed up at the end of the week with another fine per formance at Gravesend for the South of Eng land against the Australians, scoring 111 out d 450, his second innings of three figures on the Bat and Ball Ground within a fortnight. In addition to strong defence Frank Hearne has a great deal of hitting power, and, indeed, for his size—he is only 5 ft. 5 in. high—he hits surprisingly hard. He is particularly strong on the off-side, and not only drives well, but his cutting in addition is very clean and hard. He is a very fine field anywhere, but is usually seen at cover point, where he has few, if any, superiors. He bowls right-hand round- arm with a slight break from the off, and has often been of great use as a change. Our portrait is from a photograph by Haw kins & Co., of 108, King’s Hoad, Brighton.
