MIDDLESEX After three full days’ cricket, the return match between these Counties, played at the Bat and Ball Ground, at Gravesend, was left undecided on Saturday evening. At the finish, Kent were 113 on, with five wickets to fall, a result on which they deserve to be thoroughly congratulated, considering that they were as many as 261 runs behind on the first innings. The wicket was in perfect con dition, and as it was playing as well at the close as at the commencement of the game, the scoring continued up to the last. In all 1,027 runs were totalled for only 25 wickets—an average of over 41 runs, and what is very rare, two batsmen on each side were credited with scores of over a hundred. Kent, though they won the toss, were dismissed in the first innings for 196, only a moderate score against the by no means formidable bowling of Middlesex. Of this sum, 101werecontributed by the two brothers Hearne, the elder, Gr. G., adding another faultless score of 53 to his many excellent performances with the bat this season. When Middlesex went in, Kent missed the bowling of Alec Herne, who had injuredhis legat Canterbury. Messrs. Stoddart and Webbe at the outset got the measure of the Kent bowlers, and when play ceased on Thursday night, the score was 106 with no wicket down. On Friday the two Middlesex Amateurs defied all the efforts of the Kent bowlers until the total had reached to 205, when Mr. Webbe, who had been three hours at the wickets for an irreproachableinnings of 103, was caught. Mr. Stoddart was the next to go, being thrown out by F. Hearne from mid-off at 231, of which he had contributed 116. He was in three hours and a half, and there was not a semblance of a mistake in his inniiigs—his first of three figures for the County, it may be added. Messrs. Walker and O’Brien added 97 for the fifth wicket, but except from Burton, the last man, who helped to add 41, Mr. O’Brien afterwards received little assistance, and he carried out his bat for a fine score of 83. The Middlesex total of 457 is, with the one excep tion of Surrey’s 494 against Derbyshire, the highest of the season in an Inter-County match. Kent, who were in a minority of 261, on Friday night had lost one batsman for 64 runs, so that when play wras resumed on Saturday they were still 197behind, with nine wicketsto fall. The third day’scricket, though, was very sensational. George and Frank Hearne outdid the performance of Messrs. Stoddart and Webbe, and before they were separated 226 runs had been added to the score. Frank was the first to go, having been five hours at the wickets for his 142. He only
