Cricket 1886
8,4G CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 12,1886. SURREY v. DERBYSH IRE. The Surrey eleven had all the best of their return match with Derbyshire, begun at the Oval on Thursday, and were able to claim an easy victory by luncheon time on Saturday, having an innings and 122 runs to spare. Batting first on a very good wicket Mr. Shuter and Abel scored so fast for them that at two o’clock, when the interval arrived, 140 runs had been got in an hour and fifty minutes with no wicket down. On resuming the total was raised to 186 before Mr. Shuter was caught at mid-on. Except for a catch at the wicket earlv in his innings his play was faultless. He hit all-round in quite his best form, his off- drives in particular being very clean. Abel followed at 190, of which he had made 94 without a mistake. Mr. Bowden played well for his 30, and Read, Jones, and Beaumont rendered Mr. Read such useful assistance that the total had been raised to 420 for eight wickets when play ceased on Thursday night. On Friday morning 74 runs were added before the innings closed, Beaumont carrying out his bat for a well played and highly deserving score of 30. Mr. Read was in his b«st form. He met all the Derbyshire bowlers with equal confidence and his 115, his highest score this year, was a fine display of free cricket. Dispite their long outing the Derbyshire eleven played up pluckily. Cropper in the first innings contributed 93 of a total of 185, and his batting was worthy of the highest praise. Going in first he was eighth batsman out, and with the exception of a ohance in the slips when he had made 53 there was nothing like a fault. In the follow-on some good cricket was shown by Sugg, Mr. Docker, Davidson, and Coupe. The last-named, a left-handed batsman, showed excellent defence, and his batting was of distinct promise. Mr. Docker hit very freely helped by loose fieldiDg. Out of 109 made while he was in he scored 64, in which were ten 4’*. S u rrey . Mr. M P. Bowden, c Cropper, b Walker 30 Wood, bW .
