Cricket 1886
386 CEICKET i A ‘VtEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 12,1886. LANCASHIRE v. NOTTS. B arlow ’ s B e n efit . Lancashire put a very strong team into the field at Old Trafford on Thursday last to meet the redoubtable eleven representing Notts. Though the re-appearance of the Nottingham shire players at Manchester would in any case have invested the match with interest, it was rendered additionally attractive by the fact that the proceeds are to be devoted to the benefit of a professional who lias worked zealously and loyally for Lancashire cricket for the last sixteen years. Unfortunately for the game itself rain interfered partially on each of the three days, and the match was left in that most unsatisfactory state, a draw, with only a little more than an innings to each side. Mr. Hornby was fortunate enough to win the toss for Lancashire and he set his men an excellent example by his brilliant cricket. Though he played more carefully than usual, ho scored at every opportunity, and when he was at last out after an innings of two hours and fifty minutes he had made 88 of 109 runs without an actual chance. Rain, which had prolonged the luncheon interval, stopped play for half-an-hour subsequently, and at the end of the first day only four wickets had been secured for 199 runs. Heavy rain prevented a resumption till 12.30 on Friday morning. Mr. E. C. Hornby, who hit freely, and Briggs added 79 for the fifth wicket, and as all the later batsmen except Watson, who failed to score, got double figures the total had reached the very respectable sum of 323 before the end came. Notts went in for the first time at 4.30 on the second day, and when stumps were drawn had made 92, with Scotton and Barnes out. A resumption was not practicable till 1.30 on Saturday, and as it dried the wicket was so much in favour of the Lancashire bowlers that the innings closed for an addition of 100 runs. Shrewsbury stayed till the total was 151, when he failed to get home in at tempting a fourth run. He was in nearly an hour for his last 11 runs, and his 67 was of the greatest value to his side. The only other feature of note was the stand of Shacklock and Shaw, who added 30 runs for the ninth wicket. Going in again in a minority of 131 Notts, in an hour and twenty minutes, had lost Shrewsbury and Scotton for 71 when play ceased, so that they were still 60 behind at the close with eight wickets to fall. Barlow got three wickets with successive balls, his last two in the first and his first in the second innings. Despite the unfavourable weather the match, as everyone will be pleased to hear was a financial success About twenty-six thousand persons paid during the three days, and as Barlow is sure to have a heavy sub scription list his benefit must have been a thoroughly satisfactory one.
