DafttlblT (fesstp, The abstract and brief chronicle of the time.— Hamlet, As I foreshadowed last week, I am given to understand that the Eleven to represent England in the last of the three representative matches against the Australian team, to be commenced at the Oval on Thursday next, will be identical with that which proved so eminently GAME. AUG. S, 1886. successful at Lord’s last month. I am still of opinion that some slight change might, with advantage, have been made, but there is no doubt that the choice will give general satisfaction, and at all events, the players chosen have the satisfaction of knowing that on the last occasion they achieved a most brilliant victory. The Australians, particularly on their form just lately, will have a tough job to beat the Eleven of England represented by Messrs. W. G. Grace, W. W. Bead, A. G. Steel, E. F. S. Tylecote, Barlow, Briggs, Scotton, Shrewsbury, Barnes, Ulyett, and Lohmann. I understand that play will begin at 11.30 on [the second and third days. I have it on the best authority that the team of English cricketers collected by Shaw, Shrewsbury, and Lillywhite to visit Australia this winter will leave Plymouth in the Orient steamer Cuzco on the 17th of next month. I am sorry to have to add that so far nothing has as yet been accomplished in the way of a compromise, to prevent complications which are sure to arise if two English teams should by any chance really leave England to star in Australia during the coming winter. I understand that Shaw, Shrewsbury and Lillywhite have offered to submit to arbitration the question as to which of the two promoters, them selves or the Melbourne Club, should give way, and that the names of three thor oughly representative cricketers have been suggested to act. On the other hand it is said that Major Wardill has offered to transfer all the arrangements on behalf of the Melbourne Club to the Marylebone Club if the latter will take the management and respon sibilities of the tour, an altogether unlikely contingency, I should think. I fancy no one will gainsay the probability of a considerable amount of friction, or even worse, perhaps, should the two pro moters both carry out their present reso lution to the bitter end. In the interests of cricket such a suicidal course should be avoided, and I would certainly suggest that the Maxylebone Club should step in to prevent a step which cannot fail to be injurious to our national game. Lohmann’s batting figures against the Australian team are so curious that I think they well deserve the distinction of a paragraph to themselves. This is the young cricketer's record for the year so far in Australian matches :— First Second Inns. Inns. Total. May 20. Oval, Surrey v. Australians ........... 43 (n.o.) 8 (n.o) 51 July5.
