Cricket 1886

AUG. 5,1886. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 8M SO U TH G A T E RO V E R S TO U R . “ What! going the tour without the Remark able Bowler, he will put everyone of you in Earlswood.” Such was the last echo heard on the Waterloo platform as the Rovers departed on their way to disturb the peaceful ripples of the Bourne. That there are as good fish in the sea as ever came out of it, proved true as ever, for notwithstanding the absenoe of their Remarkable Bat, their more Remarkable Wicket-Keeper, and their most Remarkable Bowler, the Rovers were successful as of yore, only losing one match. The fifth day being wet prevented the match at Lyndhurst being played, and the Rovers spent the day in learn ing from the rustics the noble game of Cod- dam. A howling gale 011 the Thursday again blew off the Phillippian’s hair, which had only just recovered from a similar visitation at Cowes on a previous tour. E. S. Shaw, of Notts, umpired in his usual impartial manner, and the Rovers thank their opponents for the kind consideration with which they were treated. The Teutons are not forgotton, nor “ The Boy,” at the Highcliffe Hotel, at Bourne mouth. The anxieties of the week so affected the captain that on his return to London he was lodged in Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. SOUTHGATE ROVERS v. BOURNE MOUTH. Played at Bournemouth on July 19.
