8 2 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUG. 5,1886. HAMPSHIRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. The Hampshire Eleven, who were without Mr. Lacey, were beaten in this match, played at Southampton, on Thursday and Friday last, Somersetshire having nine wickets in hand at the finish. The scoring on both sides was below the average, and the bowlers on both sides were able to show to advantage. Somer setshire owed its success in a very great measure to the excellent bowling of the old Oxonian, Mr. E. W. Bastard. In the match, altogether, he took eleven Hampshire wickets at a cost of only 55 runs. The figures of Messrs. Trask and Barton are also deserving of notioe. H a m p sh ir e . First Innings. None of +he batsmen could do much with the bowling of Wootton and H. Hearne, helped by the wicket, and F. Sugg’s 20 was the highest score. In all Wootton took ten wickets for 88 runs, very creditable figures. K * n t . KENT v. DERBYSHIRE. The Derbyshire Eleven had the worst of the luck in their return match with Kent, played at Mote Park, Maidstone, on Thursday and Friday last, and were beaten by an innings and thirteen runs. Kent, who won the toss, only made a moderate start, and six wickets were down for 88. Mr. Marchant, who dis tinguished himself so much against Surrey, at Beckenham, at the end of last week, however, again came to the rescue of his side, and his partnership with Hickmott was productive of 90 runs. He hit in fine style, and with the exception of a difficult chance to short slip, when he had made eight, his innings was free fromf ault. Hiokmott played very steadily for his 44. Derbyshire begun very badly, but W. Chatterton hit freely, and at the close of the first day the score was 80 with four batsmen out. A heavy fall of rain on Friday morning affected the ground materially, and gave the bowlers a great advantage. During the day sixteen Derbyshire wickets fell for an aggre gate of 128 runs, and the match was over at F. Hearne, c Marlow, b Cropper .........22 W. Rashleigh, lbw, b Davidson............... 8 G.
